I met John about 5 years ago, he was the head of Software Development and his relatively small company had just been acquired by a top 20 company which was a significant change for John and the entire company to embark upon. What stood out to me then about John was that he was not just a leader, he was a coach. He understood that high performance was a consequence of personal growth versus pressure. He knew if he helped them become more self-aware they would be empowered to be their best selves.
